The exterior of the building is all curves made of curtain wall with the footprint almost in the shape of a “figure-8”. The building structure is concrete columns and concrete shafts for the stairs and elevator. The purpose of the building will be two-fold: to create a space where like-minded people can buy books and coffee and find a spot to sit back and enjoy their reading while sipping their drink. There...

The purpose of the building will be two-fold: to create a space where like-minded people can buy books and coffee and find a spot to sit back and enjoy their reading while sipping their drink. There is a void in the general area where you can read a good book with a great cup of coffee. On top of that, with a booming population in the last five years, there is a need for more dense housing solutions. The upper three levels would serve as apartments centrally located by some shopping centers within walking distance (Walmart, Grocery Stores, restaurants, multiple schools and a Community College among others). Also, being that the lot is relatively small and to maximize and the green space, the parking will be located underground. The design strategies utilized to accomplish this will be: 1. Allowing light in – lots of large windows to allow for lots of natural light into the building. 2. Connecting to nature – L-Shaped design will allow for green space to be concentrated and maximized in specific areas to create a “park-like” feel (as opposed to having a large rectangular building that only allows for a narrow strip of greenery around the entire building. 3. Natural complexity but openness – by stacking and offsetting sections of the building it will create visual interest and make the building more inviting. To give the space an open feel instead of a plain square block building which feels closed off. 4. Reverting to nature – being a former gas station, the lot is currently paved and by transforming it, it will bring more greenery back to the area and break up the sea of asphalt.
