Around 19% of Canadian children have experienced cyberbullying

On Wednesday, February 28th, students from VCAD rallied together to generate awareness about bullying for Pink Shirt Day. Just as the campaign started out 10 years ago in a small town in Nova Scotia, students on the campus wore pink shirts in a show of solidarity.

This year’s campaign was committed to raising awareness of online bullying – “Nice Needs No Filter!” According to Statistics Canada, around 19% of Canadian children have experienced cyberbullying or stalking online. With the dominance of social media in our everyday lives, it’s never been easier to amplify your voice. Unfortunately cyberbullying is a negative consequence of our availability to connect.

The Pink Shirt Day campaign aims to encourage positive interactions, and teach individuals about kindness and empathy.

“In today’s digital world, it can be impossible to escape online bullying, whether it takes the shape of harassment, spreading rumours, sharing embarrassing information or threats,” said Pink Shirt Day organizers. “This year, Pink Shirt Day is encouraging others to combat cyberbullying by thinking twice before posting something negative, and instead using the internet to spread kindness - because we know that Nice Needs No Filter!”

Students at VCAD participated in an ice cream social on the day to raise funds for the anti-bullying campaign. All staff and students were invited to the student lounge to build their own sundaes, to socialize, and to show their support against bullying.

“The event was very positive as it not only allowed students to meet their peers outside of the classroom, but gave them the opportunity to come together and take a stand against bullying,” said Claire Power, Student Services Coordinator at VCAD. “The event was a success and there was a constant influx of students coming down to enjoy their sundaes throughout the hour!”
