VCAD design talents dazzle at Vancouver Fashion Week

Many long hours of hard work and creative effort have paid off for two emerging designers who trained at VCAD. Eleni Anthony and Jae Esmane presented their exciting new collections during special runway shows at Vancouver Fashion Week on March 20.

Launched 18 years ago, Vancouver Fashion Week highlights diverse local and international fashion talent, from up-and-coming designers to established brands. The two designers were thrilled to receive the exclusive opportunity to showcase their lines during the week-long fashion celebration.

Anthony wowed the downtown Vancouver crowd with her debut collection, Obsidian Night. The all-black, ready-to-wear brand features garments created from a variety of materials, including sequins, cotton, vegan leather, and faux fur.

Anthony conceived of and created the outfits during the course of her Fashion Design diploma program at VCAD. She is getting ready to graduate this spring.

“My collection is inspired a lot by the structure and lines of modern architecture, art, and high fashion. I love interesting cut-outs and clean lines in a garment,” Anthony said.

Meanwhile, Esmane’s brand drew inspiration from techno and nightlife culture. A VCAD Fashion Design graduate, Esmane spent the past several months putting together a unique line of elegant designs with bursts of bright colour.

“My ultimate dream job just comes down to making clothes that make me happy, make other people happy. And hopefully, you know, making a living out of it,” he said.

Vancouver Fashion Week was the perfect venue for the two designers to share their creative talent and demonstrate the professional expertise they gained at VCAD.

The 72-week-long Fashion Design program gives students the practical skills they needs to enter the field. Led by industry-experienced instructors, the courses cover key topics including design, layout, fashion illustration, pattern making, garment construction, and marketing.
