Student Ambassador News
We would like to introduce to you the newest member of the Student Ambassadors, Noushin Sahebnassagh! Noushin is a member of the Fashion Design program and has been an integral part of our peer tutoring program. Please read on to find out more about Noushin.
Hi! I moved to beautiful Vancouver ten years ago. I have an industrial design & graphic design background from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. And finally found my passion in fashion. I am in my third term of Fashion Design. I can’t wait to see where fashion design takes me in my career path after VCAD. I realized that fashion design allows you to explore individuality in a way that no other design field does. And helps you to communicate with others in deeper levels. I love working with people. I also tutor at VCAD. Tutoring at VCAD gives me a chance to connect with more brilliant students, to teach, and to learn from them.
Welcome to the Ambassadors Noushin!

My practice is a multi-disciplinary process led exploration of image culture and its effects on the formation of the self.
I mine found-and-donated print materials as my primary source. It is important to me that the source materials are diverse in both era and subject matter as the work both questions and maps what I call the familial structures of images. Focusing on the aesthetically formal and abstract qualities of the pictorial language allows the images to lead the construction and lends to the linkage of contextually diverse subject matter into surprising new patterns. I join the images together using strictly formal considerations, following a line, shape or colour running from one image into another. The resulting scrap-systems play at re-considering the objective voice of the scientific, consumerist, mechanical and the diagrammatic. This new work is an extension of the methodology that I developed while completing my Master’s Degree at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
In this show, Machinations, the machine-like structures are built from images with a mechanical aesthetic no matter the original context; my scissors slice through satellites, car parts, furniture, steel girders, jewellery, and electronics… I join these images together without context or understanding of their original function or purpose to construct new imaginings while considering the potential for action and machine movement. In a way, this is similar to the language of the diagram, which requires the viewers to become a user and input their own field of expertise into the diagram activating a physical experience of thought and learning.
Working with animator Jayson Woolvett gave me an opportunity to truly activate the scraps in real time. To do this we had to determine the movements that each structure implied. We had to ask ourselves which type of machine it was? What does it do? How does it move? How does it react to other movements? How and when do we address the materiality of the paper source? The current Cold War political environment and the ongoing threat of nuclear war inspired the drone idea highlighting its connections to Surveillance Capitalism, a system in which the images you look at are looking back at you- recording your data.
If I had one sentence to summarize this project it would be: Building the artefacts of the future.
