Do Grades Matter for Art & Design Graduates?

6 MIN READ / June 19, 2025

When it comes to pursuing a career in art and design, one question inevitably lingers in the minds of prospective students: Do grades really matter? After all, traditional academic paths place a heavy emphasis on grades but can the same be said for visual arts, graphic design, 3D animation, interior design, or game development? At Visual College of Art and Design (VCAD), we understand that creative education doesn’t fit neatly into standardized boxes. That’s because creativity itself is rarely black and white. In this article, we explore the role grades play in art and design education and more importantly, what truly defines success for creative graduates.

The Short Answer? Yes... and No

Let’s get straight to the point: grades matter but not in the way you think. Grades in an art or design program can serve as a guidepost. They’re useful indicators of whether you’re meeting assignment goals, understanding design principles, and pushing your creative boundaries. They can even boost motivation, drive improvement, and keep students accountable. But unlike traditional academic fields, grades aren’t the golden ticket in the creative world. Employers aren’t lining up to see your transcript they’re lining up to see your portfolio. The truth is that your body of work speaks louder than any letter grade.

A Unique Lens: How Art & Design Education Works

In a mathematics course, there’s a correct answer. In a biology class, there’s a definitive outcome. But in a studio based art or design course? The creative process is subjective. What one professor deems brilliant, another might see as simply okay. As a result, grading can feel inconsistent or unclear, especially for students new to the world of art school. At VCAD, we recognize this complexity. That’s why our instructors don’t just hand out grades they offer meaningful, constructive feedback designed to nurture your creative voice and sharpen your technical skills. You’re not memorizing facts; you’re building ideas, iterating on feedback, and producing work that grows with you. In that sense, grades are only one part of the journey.

Where Grades Do Matter: Graduate Studies & Scholarships

There’s one area where grades can carry weight: graduate school applications and scholarship opportunities. If you’re planning to pursue a Master of Fine Arts (MFA), teaching certification, or another postgraduate program, your undergraduate grades may be considered. Certain scholarship committees also look at academic performance as part of their selection criteria. However, even in these cases, your portfolio remains king. Admissions teams at creative institutions consistently place more value on originality, craftsmanship, experimentation, and technical skill than your GPA. Grades may get your foot in the door, but your work and your passion open it wide.

What the Industry Really Wants

So, what do hiring managers and clients want to see?

  • A standout portfolio that shows off your versatility, creativity, and technical ability

  • Strong communication skills can you explain your process? Talk about your work with confidence?

  • A collaborative spirit design doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Studios and teams want people who can take feedback, brainstorm, and contribute

  • Professionalism meeting deadlines, following briefs, taking initiative

  • Passion not just for art, but for learning, growing, and pushing boundaries

You’ll rarely hear, “What grade did you get in Typography 101?” You’ll often hear, “Can you show me how you approached that branding project in your portfolio?”

What You Should Focus on in Art School

If grades aren’t everything, what should you focus on as a student?

1. Build an Exceptional Portfolio

Your portfolio is your creative passport. Include a variety of pieces that demonstrate your range branding, layout, life drawing, 3D environments, interior mood boards, motion graphics whatever is relevant to your field. Show that you can think conceptually, iterate ideas, and bring projects to life.

At VCAD, our programs are designed around project based learning. You’ll graduate with a professional portfolio that reflects real world challenges and industry expectations.

2. Stay Curious and Keep Learning

Take feedback seriously. Ask questions. Attend workshops. Volunteer for projects outside of class. The students who go the farthest are the ones who see every challenge as a chance to grow.

3. Demonstrate Passion

During interviews or critiques, be ready to talk about your process. What inspired the piece? What tools did you use? What were the biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them? Showing enthusiasm goes a long way.

4. Fill the Gaps

If your portfolio lacks a particular skill like life drawing or 3D sculpting, take the initiative. Sign up for an extra course, create a personal project, or collaborate with peers. VCAD’s instructors provide one on one guidance to help you identify and fill these gaps, so you’re fully equipped for the industry.

So, Do Grades Matter?

Yes... and no.

Grades can be useful markers of progress, especially for scholarships or graduate programs. But they are not the full picture not by a long shot. In creative careers, what matters most is your portfolio, your work ethic, and your ability to bring ideas to life.

If you’re passionate, committed, and ready to grow, your future won’t be determined by a number on a page. It will be defined by the story you tell through your work.

So take the grade as feedback, not a verdict. Use it as fuel, not fear. And remember at VCAD, we see more than your GPA, we see your potential.
