British Columbia's newest center for Applied Arts education is preparing to open its doors this spring. And while they put the finishing touches on the new campus, staff and faculty at the Visual College of Art and Design are quite eager to give the public a sneak peek at what they've got in store.

"Vancouver's design community - from fashion to graphic design to video games - is growing stronger," says VCAD Vice-President of Admissions Larry Heinzlmeir. "The next generation of designers needs to be nurtured in a stimulating and creative atmosphere from people who are as passionate about design as they are. This is where we come in."

VCAD may be new to Vancouver, but the college is well known on Vancouver Island. For over 35 years, the Victoria College of Art and Design has taught artists and imaginative people to follow their passions down the creative path. VCAD's Fine Arts diploma program is highly-regarded for providing a well-rounded arts education in an environment that emphasizes creativity and individuality.

Instead of Fine Arts programs, curriculum at VCAD will focus on career-based training in the Applied Arts. Students will follow results-oriented curriculum that combines theoretical learning with hands-on training. As such, the campus will be the city's newest hub for students of Graphic Design and Interior Design. While the Fashion Design and Marketing & Merchandising for Fashion diploma programs will prepare graduates for careers in BC's burgeoning fashion industry. The 3D Modeling, Animation Art and Design program will prepare grads to meet the demands of the ever-evolving video gaming and visual effects industries.

In addition, VCAD students will learn from instructors who not only share the commitment, desire and passion for art and design, but are also industry-experienced professionals. By the end of their programs, graduates will have built a professional portfolio that displays their creative flair and shows that they possess the skills, talents and vision that employers are looking for.

The public are invited to attend the Open House and Information Session on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Sign-in for this event is 5:30 PM sharp. This is a chance to tour the new campus and learn more about the school. Instructors will be on hand to answer questions about the programs, learning outcomes and potential career options available to art and design graduates. Admissions representatives will be available to discuss educational options.

VCAD is also awarding up to $150, 000 in scholarships to high school seniors this year! These awards will include up to one full-tuition, four half-tuition scholarships and up to 50 partial-tuitions.

Classes are now forming for the spring session at the VCAD campus at  1111 Melville Street in Vancouver. For more information about VCAD or to RSVP for the Open House, call 604.694.0019 or visit online at www.vcad.ca.
