From haute couture to mainstream malls
Vancouver, BC - June 1, 2010 - One minute you're dreaming about an exquisite haute couture gown and the next, you're standing in line waiting to snap up several coveted high-low fashion pieces. Over the last few years we have seen a significant increase in the amount of collaborations, and more importantly a higher quality of collaborations, between high-end fashion designers (think Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel, Sonia Rykiel, Jimmy Choo, and Matthew Williamson) and mainstream retail stores (Swedish fashion chain H&M takes the lead).
As students studying fashion design, what does this mean? On a positive note, the presence, and high demand, for such high-low collaborations has created a unique market for fashion design students. In addition to working for established design houses, job opportunities in the high-low fashion market are becoming more attractive and distinguished. What an incredible opportunity it would be to work on capsule projects for big-name retailers like GAP and H&M, yet still dabble with ideas conceived by fashion design icons.
Designer Collaborations
The response from consumers regarding these collaborations has reached a fever-pitch. Many die-hards line up overnight just to get their hands on an exclusive piece of clothing, shoe or accessory designed by their favourite fashion house-though at affordable prices and accessible locations, wouldn't you?
