Most people would agree that a carwash is good for a car. But for VCAD’s Director, it would ruin a work of art. His 1968 VW bus was painted earlier this spring by residents at the Victoria Juvenile Detention Centre.
The project came together through chance when the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria discussed plans for an entry in the Victoria Day and Oak Bay parades. At the same time a teacher at the local Youth Custody Service facility was looking for something young people in the Victoria Centre could paint. VCAD’s Director offered his van to both the CACGV and the teacher.
The result is a moving celebration of the summer of love - the year the Victoria Community Arts Council was born. The young artists who transformed the bus put their handprints on the roof. A touching message lies in the detail where one artist painted the words "Love" and "Peace" and also added "Hope."
