Fashion Designers Find Inspiration in Films
Back
Spring 2010 collections draw inspiration from films, both old and new.
Vancouver, BC - March 8, 2010 - A number of Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear collections were inspired by Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. The movie resonated so deeply with Donatella Versace that she created a variety of down-the-rabbit-hole geometric prints for Versace, while Luella's models channeled Alice in blue dresses with full skirts. And Marc Jacobs, noting he was tired of studs and black leather, presented a line that was full of floral prints, ruffles, high necklines and puffy shoulders.
Gareth Pugh moved away from the hard-edged, super-structured looks that he is best known for, and instead showed a ready-to-wear collection that was romantic and ethereal. Taking inspiration from fantastical movies such as the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, his models walked down the runway looking like mythical birds draped in feather-light tops, dresses and pants.
While some designers are looking to new films for fresh ideas, others are being influenced by movies from the past. For Spring 2010, Bottega Veneta's Karate Kid-inspired collection featured the concept of a neutral canvas (shades of cream with an occasional splash of green, magenta and turquoise) wrapped up by soft belts. Notable standouts from the fashionable yet functional collection were the belted karate jacket that was made into a halter, asymmetrical tunics and rolled-up shorts.
