Local designer relies on eco-fabric to create fresh designs

Vancouver fashion designer Kim Cathers designs and creates her own line called Kim Cathers elements (formally kdon). Her commitment to creating products that are 100% recycled and eco-friendly is inspired by the relationship between humans and Mother Earth.

Cathers believes that humans who give back to the earth through recycling, composting, and buying local will preserve and restore nature and the actions of these responsible consumers will help spread the word of environmental consciousness. Her design aesthetic combines carefully sourced textile materials with unique and distinctive ready-to-wear clothing and accessories designs.

Best known for her role as one of 14 Canadian fashion designers on Project Runway Canada in 2009, Cathers has demonstrated that sustainable pieces of clothing can be environmentally friendly and cutting edge at the same time.

Using fabric from Our Social Fabric, a textile recycling and re-manufacturing initiative in Vancouver, BC, Cathers' clothing designs range from structured to casual. Wool dresses with strong silhouettes, narrow linen skirts, tailored coats, and flowing silk empire dresses are all beautifully cut and designed for the modern, sophisticated woman. She utilizes patterned fabric and bright colours to bring life to her clothing, and is not afraid to incorporate exposed zippers and cinched waists in her designs.

Cathers is on a mission to bring awareness to sustainable textile production and design. People who purchase and wear environmentally responsible clothing not only encourage a positive impact on the earth, but also support the growth of eco-friendly designers, manufacturers, and retail establishments. Cathers' involvement on the advisory board of Vancouver Eco Fashion Week and Our Social Fabric showcases her dedication to the art.
